💵 I’d like to introduce you to someone. Meet...

Your money.

Understanding your own finances is one of the most radical and empowering things you could possibly do.

Problem is, it sounds hellishly boring. And confusing. And totally not radical or empowering at all.

Can I tell you why?

This week, meet:

➡️ The problem with personal finance
➡️ Your options for learning all this
➡️ You + Me

The problem with personal finance

I love my friends.

They’re intelligent and hilarious.

The vast majority of them have stable jobs, are under the age of 35… have limited savings… and have NO systems for their money. Like, some aren’t even 100% sure how much income hits their account on a monthly basis.

Meanwhile, I just bought a house at 26 with no financial support from my family, no hugely-high-paying job, while saving away for emergencies and retirement AND keeping room for fun things. (And if you asked politely, I could tell you to the cent how much income I made last month.)

I guarantee I’m not smarter than my friends. I’m not better at my job than them. I don’t come from a better background than them.

I just happened to learn how to manage my money.

And I’ve learned that the stuff that gets you ahead is actually shockingly basic.

So I want to make it simple for everyone.

Because you deserve the freedom that comes with total control over your money.

Personal finance needs a re-brand

“Personal finance” switches your brain off.

“Personal finance” sounds like spreadsheets.

“Personal finance” gives you that same feeling as “10pm trying to figure out your high school algebra homework at the kitchen table.”

Yet…

If you have a full time job, you spend 35%+ of your waking life working. For money. That time is valuable, and so is that money.

It should be of interest to you to track where every single dollar of that goes.

Your options for learning this sh*t

As with most things in modern life, you either learn about money from your family, or you learn it later from the internet.

Or, more often, you un-learn what you were taught from your family and find a way to re-learn it online later.

And boy oh boy, finance gurus are in no short supply on social media. But most money advice I see online is batsh*t:

  • Worst case, it’s cleverly disguised grifts scamming people who don’t know any better out of their money (read: most stock market advice; 99.999% of crypto advice; most anyone who has the phrase “generational wealth” in their bio).

  • Best case, it’s someone who’s so out of touch with where YOU’RE at that their advice is almost meaningless (read: a YouTube video teaching you how to save $100,000 in one year then they mention at the end that they make $150,000+ per year; self-proclaimed millionaires showing you the “ideal” budget, which is most likely laughable in the year of our lord 2024).

Is any of this actually helpful for the average person?

Probably not.

But what if you never learned this from your parents? What if your family never talked about money?

Or what if they sucked at money?

The truth is — 90% of managing your personal finances is not actually about money at all.

It’s about the financial mindsets you inherited from your parents. It’s about your spending habits (and the emotions that come with ‘em). It’s about your own levels of self awareness. It’s about fighting against an entire system that asks you to spend everything you have, then makes you feel like sh*t once you do.

And above all, it’s about values.

You + Me

Here’s what I’ve found to be true…

  • What you spend on is directly tied to your values.

  • And when your spending and your values aren’t in alignment… You feel it in all areas of your life.

  • BUT, budgets are hard to stick to.

  • And finance is hard to understand if you haven’t made “making money” your entire personality.

My goal? To break this sh*t down so it’s simple.

I’m writing to YOU

Well, this might not be for you. But it could be, especially if 3 or more of the following is true:

  • No one ever taught you about money.

  • Your family never talked about money.

  • Your family SUCKS with money.

  • Money gives you anxiety.

  • You’ve never tried budgeting.

  • You tried budgeting, but it doesn’t “work” for you.

  • You feel “behind” money-wise.

  • You don’t WANT money to be a priority, but unfortunately the world isn’t really in agreement with that.

  • You’re smart, but finances are intimidating to you.

There are systems for managing your money that will work for you.

And managing your money will change your life.

Am I sounding dramatic yet?

It’s true. Two years ago, I didn’t think I’d ever be able to own a house. five years ago, I couldn’t imagine ever working a job that made over $30k/year.

I’ve figured some of these things out, and I want you to, too.

“Wait, I need MORE”

Here are my goals for this year, that I’d love you to be a part of:

  • Building a place for folks to learn how to manage their money.

  • Real talk about finances and actual budget breakdowns.

  • Live Budget Nights where we track our finances together (and tbh probably drink wine).

  • 1:1 budgeting help, for those who’d find it helpful.

So far… None of these things exist in the Meet Your Money world.

But I’ll keep you updated, and let’s see where we land by the end of 2024 🙂
